Sunny days, summer vacations, and trips to the lake can throw off your usual dental routine. But don’t worry, we have you covered with 3 fool proof ways to prevent summertime tooth decay.

Stay on a routine!  Whether it is fireworks, BBQ with friends, or camping; DO NOT give in to the temptation to skip bedtime brushing and flossing. Even on those late nights of fun.   If you have children, keeping yourself and your children on a dental routine during the summer not only helps to ensure they develop healthy dental habits but allows you the opportunity to be a good example.  Did you know that if you brush your teeth with your children for 2 minutes, twice a day, you are adding 6 hours together over the summer?   Consistent brushing and flossing keep your kids’ oral health on track for their back-to-school dental visits.

Just say no to sugary drinks and snacks  The warm sun keeps the temperatures up, making it a perfect time for lemonade, juice, soda or sports drinks. Instead, provide water to stay hydrated – cool, clean water. Are you aware that the Mayo clinic recommends drinking 2.7 liters of water a day for women and 3.7 liters for men.  Children children should drink at least six cups of water a day.  Let your children tell you when they are hungry instead of offering them snacks. Grab some veggies or fruit instead of processed or artificial sweets. Keeping these treats to a minimum keeps the damage to a minimum.

Try tea. Did you know that tea contains compounds that suppress bacteria, which slows down tooth decay and gum disease. However, make sure you don’t add sugar!

Keeping to a routine and staying conscious of what you drink during the summer will lower tooth decay.  Enjoy these summer days!
