Dental Glossary

Dental Bonding is a procedure that utilizes a composite resin for a variety of structural and cosmetic purposes.

Dental Bridges are frames on which two crowns and a false tooth are attached. The adjacent teeth will need to be ground down to secure the bridge. The false tooth on top of the bridge will sit above the gum.

Dental Crowns are part of restorative dentistry. When a tooth is decayed or weakened, a crown may be necessary to ensure no further problems with the tooth. Crowns can be made from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or a full gold crown.

Digital Dental Imaging is a computerized technology for superior X-ray results. With the help of sophisticated software a thorough evaluation and precise diagnosis can be made.

Dental Plaque and Tartar is a normal process of bacteria that grows on surfaces within the mouth. It can destroy the tissues of the tooth causing tooth decay. It is colorless at first and later forms tartar. It is found commonly between the teeth, front of teeth, behind teeth on chewing surfaces, all along the gumline or even below the gumline. It can be controlled and removed with good oral hygiene and regular trips to the dentist.

Fillings are used to repair teeth that are affect by decay, cracks, fractures, etc. Once the decayed or affected portion is removed then the tooth is filled with a composite filling.

Gingivitis is a form of periodontal disease that destroys the tissues that support the teeth. It is due to the long-term effects of plaque deposits on your teeth and is a major cause of tooth decay.

Grinding is also called bruxism and can damage your teeth and jaws over long period of time.

Gum Disease is also known as periodontal disease and is mostly caused by plaque and bacteria buildup not treated in its early stage. Other causes of periodontal disease include teeth grinding, tobacco use, various medications, and genetics. Gingivitis is the beginning stage of gum disease, and is treatable.

Halitosis is also known as bad breath. It affects tens of millions of Americans. It is caused by a building of gas-forming bacteria that often appears as a mealy white or yellow biofilm.

Oral Hygiene is the care of the teeth and mouth so that it is comfortable, clean, most and free of infection. Good oral hygiene prevents cavities, gingivitis, periodontal diseases and bad breath.

Periodontal Maintenance is an ongoing dental cleaning procedure used to thoroughly clean and keep periodontal (gum) disease under control.

Root Canal treatment is the process of going inside the tooth into the pulp space and removing infected, dead tissue. The space is then cleaned, disinfected and sealed.

Sealants are tooth colored or clear shaded resin material that is applied to and bond with the chewing surface of the back teeth in order to fill in the pits and groves of the teeth. This makes it easier to clean and less likely to develop tooth decay.

Shaping is a dental treatment for teeth that are not symmetrical, are overlapped or have visible cracks and chips. Dental veneers are used in shaping.

Teeth Cleaning is the exclusion of dental plaque and tartar to avert cavities, gingivitis and gum disease. The process takes between 30 and 45 minutes to complete.

Tooth Extractions are the best option when saving a tooth isn’t possible. A dental extraction may be a consideration when decay extends deep under the gum, the tooth is cracked, an infection cannot be resolved or there is severe periodontal disease. You’re completely numb and only feel pressure. The tooth would be gently nudged, with pressure, the ligaments holding the tooth in place give up and the tooth comes out.

Veneers are porcelain veneers that correct imperfections such as chips, gaps, stains and teeth misalignment. Veneers are custom-fit with results that look natural.
